Granite is a popular choice for countertops, floors, walls, shower and may other surfaces in homes and businesses. This natural stone is comprised primarily of tough crystals along with a variety of minerals. The variation in minerals allows the formation of many different colors and patterns. The tough crystals result in a very hard natural stone that can be polished to a mirror-like finish. Additionally, these crystals make this stone highly resistant to scratching. This mineral composition also allows this rock high resistance to acids and most household chemicals. The result is a highly durable surface that is ideal for countertops. However, because of its hardness and chemical resistance, may people think that this natural stone is impervious to staining. This is not true. The ability of this type of stone to absorb staining agents/liquids varies quite significantly. Many types of this family of natural stone, especially the lighter colors, are ultra-absorbent and thus easily stained. To reduce the risk of staining, we recommend applying and maintaining a high quality sealer.
